Before going through all the features that new printers have nowadays, wireless connectivity, PC-less printing, or LCDs, every printer that is portable should be able to print decent printouts. Each HP portable printer that was released is capable of such feat. If we focus on HP’s portable printers only, excluding photo printers, each one of them is able to produce high quality printouts. In this article, we will focus on the primary features that portable printers from HP have.

Portability
When HP started with their first portable printer, the HP DeskJet 450, it took portability as its major consideration by coming up with a smaller size compared to ordinary desktop printers. The DeskJet 450 came in the dimensions of 13.3" x 3.2" x 6.5". Its predecessors came with that size as well. These dimensions make it convenient for these printers to be easily carried. Stowing them away is similarly easy since you don’t have to allocate that much space for the printer.

Colored Printing
Each portable HP printer is capable of printing in color. From the DeskJet 450, DeskJet 460 to the OfficeJet H470, they offer a high printing resolution of 4800 x 1200 dots per inch. Though not all of them offer borderless photo printing, the latest of their models, the OfficeJet H470 does.

High Printing Speed
Though not all of them have the same speed, each one of the portable printer models has tried to keep up with the highest speed available. When DeskJet 450 was released, the speed was pegged at 9 pages per minute. When DeskJet 460 was released, the printing speed for monochrome jumped from 9ppm to 17ppm. The colored printing followed closely at 16ppm. Now, with its latest model, the OfficeJet H470, it currently holds the title for being the world’s fastest mobile printer at 22ppm.

Maximum Operating System Support
Each one of the portable printers from HP offers support to multiple operating systems. When HP developed the DeskJet 450, it supports all current Windows operating systems starting from Windows 95 to Windows XP Professional. It even supports the mobile edition of Windows, Windows CE. Aside from Windows, it also offers support to Mac operating systems.

Options
Each one of the portable printer models from HP always has optional models. If we take a look at the latest model, the OfficeJet H470, you have the option to go for the standard H470 or two other models, the H470B and H470WBT. HP makes an effort to provide options for different kinds of people. There are people who would prefer the additional wireless interface capability. For some people who don’t have other portable devices, it is much more logical to purchase the standard model. The price difference of H470 and H470WBT, if you refer to HP’s website, is about a hundred dollars. If you don’t plan to use other portable gadgets with it, then you can save a hundred dollars by buying the standard model. HP’s DeskJet 450 and 460 had these options as well.

HP clearly makes an effort in being a market leader in the portable printers department. HP does it by constantly providing capabilities and features that are constantly improving, whether it is by picture quality or printing speed.

If you are looking for a portable printer scanner, one choice of action for you will be to search the internet and type in the keywords "printer scanner." You will be directed towards various multi-functional printers as well as all-in-ones. Unfortunately, a few of them will be portable. Though there is a ton of printers that have the features of a printer and a scanner rolled into one, there are only a few of these printer scanners that come in a portable package. So far, most printer scanner models come in a desktop design and they are too bulky to be considered for carrying.

Canon is able to produce a series of printers that are also capable of scanning. However, they are not advertised as printer scanners. In fact, they are advertised as portable printers. If you are familiar with Canon’s Bubble Jet series, you will know that the BJC 50, BJC55, BJC80 and BJC85 have an optional IS-12 color image scanner cartridge that you can get at any Canon Store. This optional accessory converts each of these portable printers into a portable printer scanner. These converted sheet-fed scanners are able to scan at 360 dots per inch resolution. Unlike all-in-one printers where the scanned document is placed on a layer of glass, these printers scan documents like those that they are printing. Instead of shooting out ink, it scans the document line by line.

The resolution of 360dpi is not so ideal in this generation. Although it is expected since these scanners are not flatbed scanners. Scanners that use the ADF or what is commonly called Auto Document Feeder are capable of picking up only a few details compared to flatbed scanners. Let us take for example, Canon’s all-in-one printer, MX7600. It has both a flatbed scanner and an ADF scanner. The ADF resolution is at 600dpi while the flatbed resolution is at 4800 x 9600 dpi. Compared to the later scanner models, the resolution of these printer/scanners are still in its early stages.

So far, no printer company has yet invested in a printer scanner that is also portable aside from Canon. Additionally, compared to the resolution of the latest scanners available in the market, these portable printer scanners do not have the printing speed that most printers today have. The best speed you can get from these printers is 5ppm and that is in black and white. If you want to print a colored page, the speed is 2ppm. That means it will take you 30 seconds to get one page through.

Do not be discouraged. If you need a portable printer that is able to scan at the same time, then these portable printers are still your best options. The main disadvantage of these printers is their speed. Other than that, they are still able to deliver crisp black and white texts as well as brilliant colors. It may take a while before we see portable printer scanners with very high scanning resolutions. If you still wish to continue buying these Canon models, you will have better luck looking for them in sites like Amazon and eBay since Canon has already discontinued the production of these models.
