The HP Color LaserJet 3800, with Q6470a toner is one of the few sub $1000 color laser printers in the market today. Most of its counterparts promised quality color print, but most of them ended up with prints that show a lot of discoloration. The LaserJet 3800 looks like a device that would change this fact. Printing speed is necessary in any office laser printer. The average print speed is at around 18 pages per minute for monochrome and 14 pages for color prints. However, the HP LaserJet clocked at around 21 pages per minute for both color and monochrome. It is actually one of the fastest sub $1000 color printers around. The paper tray can handle a maximum of 350 sheets, which is just enough for most users.

The HP LaserJet has a resolution of 600 x 600 dpi, which is pretty much average for any laser printer. However, what makes the HP stand out is its built-in image enhancer, which is called the ImageREt 3600. The ImageREt 3600 is HP’s award winning image enhancement system that can optimize any image and result to beautiful prints. The package includes 6000-page toner cartridges for black, red, blue, and yellow. Each print cost around 2.2 cents for black and 2.8 for color. This is actually very affordable for a color laser printer in its class. In fact, this is one of lowest we have seen.

Connectivity is pretty basic since it uses a single USB 2.0 hub. It does not have any wireless and parallel port. The package includes a USB wire, which is around 6 feet long. This freebie actually increases its value, since a USB like this will cost around $80. When the machine is in use, it uses approximately 737 Watts. If it is on standby, it brings it down to a measly 48 Watts.

Canon made the iP100’s body simple but stylish. The matte silver body has curved edges and classy black trim. Its overall visual appeal is sharp enough for business meetings and presentations.

The iP100 top lid and paper tray fold neatly into the printer body for easy transport. If you have a fairly large laptop bag, you may be able to slide the iP100 in next to your PC.

Print Quality and Performance

The iP100’s print quality ranges from average to spectacular. It created text documents with mostly crisp, clear letters, but occasionally some characters looked a little blurrier than others.

Photo quality was consistently outstanding. I printed both 4 x 6 and 8 x 10 images. The iP100 rendered even the tiniest details of colorful landscapes with sharp lines and true-to-life color. Ink doesn’t dry instantaneously, but after a minute or two you won’t have to worry about smudging.

The iP100 is also fast. It finished a single page of a text-heavy Word document in less than 15 seconds and it needed just over one minute to rattle off nine more pages.

I printed a borderless 4 x 6 photo in 50 seconds and an 8 x 10 photo in 2:46. Both of those speeds are faster than Canon’s previous model, the iP90.

Helpful Features

You can connect your PictBridge-capable camera directly to the iP100 and immediately create prints. Alternately, you can transfer pictures through the IrDa infrared capability, or ante up $50 for an optional Bluetooth connectivity.

Canon offers a range of optional accessories to make your iP100 even more useful on the road. The car adapter costs $89, or you can opt for the $99 battery pack that works for about three hours before you’ll need to charge it again.

iP100 Printer: The Bad

High costs are the biggest drawbacks to the iP100. The printer itself is fairly expensive. But the ink cartridges are expensive, too. The small black cartridge sells for $12, and the tri-color cartridge is $17. In the end, you’ll be spending about 25 cents for a full-color 4 x 6, and about 3 cents for a letter-sized sheet of black-and-white text.

Without the optional battery pack, your only power option is the AC adapter, which is not ideal for many on-the-go tasks. So unless your usage plans include constant access to an electrical outlet you’ll need to factor in the cost of the car adapter or battery.

And if you need perfectly sharp text documents for business use, the iP100 is a questionable choice.

Good Overall Value

Portable inkjet printers are very much a specialty product aimed at people who really need prints on the go. You’ll sacrifice some quality and speed by choosing a portable printer like the iP100, but very few printers can offer this kind of performance in such a portable package.

Hello, I’m a mature student and printing out specific work for my university lectures is paramount to me succeeding at university.
